Mimmo Rotella
The main focal point of this piece, much as in many of Rotella's pieces of art, is Marylin Monroe. The bright red of the poster draws the eye immediately and the rips in the image reveal a stark contrast of blue. This image links to the force theme as you can simply see the movement and force of each rip in this poster and it creates the beauty of the art not the poster.
|
The blue in this image attracts the eye when paired with the texture of the ripped paper and the curve and flow of Monroe's dress. Focus has been drawn away from the original focus of the poster ( to advertise) and towards the woman by the destruction. The direction of each rip and the things they choose to cover blurs every part of the image exempt for her.
|
In this image Rotella enhances the original contrast. The bright yellows and deep blue draws attention to Monroe's hair and the title of the movie. But the bright white rips in the image creates a third focal point and many of them travel with the direction of her body which draws the eye to the point of her face.
|
Rotella was a very influential Italian artist from post war Europe, and he was born in Catanzaro in Calabia in October 7 1918. He makes his art work by altering newspaper advertisements in the styles of Décollage and retro d'affiche. The first being a technique where an artist removes elements from an object to make the peice of art, and the latter is simply adding them. Retro d'affiche started in the period 1953-1954 and was first displayed to the public in December 1955. Mimmo was also a member of the Noveau Realism later in life, which was founded in 1960.
He began in the 1950's as a Painter of Geometric abstractions and it was only later in his life that he turned to advertising. he found his bases everywhere, even ripping them off of walls and displays. He would then rip and change them and fix them to a canvas to create his Retro d'affiche art style. He was fascinated with pop culture and influential people such as Elvis and Marilyn Monroe and so they are often reflacted in his artwork.

Shirin Neshat
This image is powerful through the connotations it draws, the hands clasping the microphone incite an urge to speak and the Persian calligraphy covering the hands in a pattern speaks volumes of words that are wished to be said. the attention of the viewer is drawn more to the calligraphy because of the design it is shaped in.
|
In this image Neshat uses the lack of color to outline the important political message in the image and draw the eye to it. The use of a face so close to the barrel of a gun elicits a powerful emotional response from anyone looking at it. The way Neshat presents this as not one image singularly but two images side by side is also powerful and connected the death and the beauty of the words.
|
Also in this image as with the others in this series by Neshat the use of stunning Persian caligraphy draw emotion and curiosity from the viewer. The eyes of the woman in this portrait draw the attention and bring humanity into the piece but so close to the gun is also powerful imagery.
|
This Persian artist and Photographer explores the force of women in Allah through her Photography it shows the ideas of feminism in Islamic fundamentalism and military. This is shown from her portraits of women covered in beautiful Persian calligraphy.
Neshat is one of four children born of a wealthy family in western Iran. Her parents brought her up in a warm welcoming muslim community, which was introduced to her by her religious grandparents. The influence of the Western world in her life is heavy as in her on opinion her parents "romanticised" western ideals and therefore gradually lost their own beliefs and personality.
Her ideals of the force of women is obviously shown in all her art and specifically her photography. It has been featured in the guardian and she often shows her views and art in the western world.

In this image an apple in suspended on a spike perfectly, with the concentric circles of the apple and stalk in alignment. The apple in pierced in the center by a bullet that stretches the skin and center of the apple body to the left and right of the center. The colours are really ritch and the red is vibrant and the blues and yellow contrast dramatically.
|
In this image a card is thrown into the air and pierced with the bullet of a gun. The reason I find this image interesting because it is so perfectly placed. The card is aligned perfectly and the bullet is going perfectly perpendicularly to the card. I also find the colours in this image eye catching because the blue and the reds in the card.
|
This image is defiantly different to the others. It does create variation though, the bullet pierces the top of the apple and is creates a pretty pattern on the top of the apple. The skin of the apple is stretching and tearing up and out which is very pleasing as it shows the aggression of the movement in the image.

Edgerton was born on the 4th of January 1990 in Fremont, Nebraska and was a professor of Electrical Engineering. One of his large achievements was in helping develop and transform the stroboscope, which was a instrument that makes a moving object appear frozen or slow moving. It took 120 images per second and he used this to create beautiful images of objects frozen in every point of motion or just one. He used this to capture bullets piercing objects, or many subsequent images of athletes of moving objects.
He also teamed up with Kenneth J. Germeshausen and Herbert Grier to form a company called EG&G. This company was made to consult industrial clients. They became the permanent contractor to the Atomic Energy Commission, and so they created beautiful but slightly scary images of nuclear tests thought the 1950's to the 1960's. in addition to this his achievements include that his work was featured in the National Geographic Magazine in October 1987. Although his work is beautiful and to me, definitely art to Edgerton his work was simply engineering.

Man vs Nature
Exploring the idea of nature re-taking the man made world.
Nadav Kander - Half Life
in 1986 Chernobyl's 4th reactor exploded due to a malfunction whilst testing what would happen in the even of avower shut down. As a result of the powerful and dangerous radiation leaking from the site it is almost completely abandoned my human life. As a result nature has leaked back into the concrete city and so is a great example of man vs Nature.

This photo plays with colour and texture drawing your eye to the blue of the decaying floors and the warm beige of the nature crawling in in the shape of a tree. It emphasises the choice of location and the significance of it in showing us a possible future of our, man made world.
|
This photo of bright red USSR flags backed by a cyan crumbling wall draws the eye in. The use of colour and light brings the eye to the centre of the photo and effortlessly links the fall of the USSR and this photo.
|
In this photo focus of the photo is highlighted by the view through the window it gives the image a depth and draws the eye to the pale cloudy scene outside.
|
These photos exploer the force of humans on nature and themselves. The contrast of what recognise as normal infrastructure and the obvious devastation and ruin that they are in highlights the force put upon them. He takes the public out of their everyday life and shows them a possible future but also the damage we have already created.
Artist and me
In this photo Kandar creates a striking image of change and decay using contrast of colours, layers and many textures. The focal point of this image is the green, moulding, old walls. The colours in this photo are very pronounced and the green really jumps out . Attention is being drawn to the decay in the piece and the idea that nature is reclaiming human infrastructure.
|
Similarly in my photo the focal point is exaggerated by the cure of different colours and textures and the ideas of nature reclaiming human infrastructure is being shown. Also in both photos the colour green is used to highlight the focal point of the image and draws attention to the changes in the infrastructure.

WWW: I like the use of texture in the nature and small comparisons of man made infrastructure. I drew attention to the natural elements in all the photographs to show the importance of nature.

Man vs Nature
In this shoot I was exploring the ideas of nature fighting human control and force over it. I was both trying to highlight the weaknesses of nature and our rule. I tried to focus on the formal elements i could use and the colours I could bring out. I positioned the focal point of each piece so that it draws the eye to either a human, or natural element.
I think that this shoot was successful in the colour aspect, I like the yellows, greens and pinks which do contrast a little bit with the grass of many of the man made structures. I was trying to improve my use of the formal elements, they were not that successful however I think some of the photos were a lot better then a lot of other landscape photos I have taken in the past. I often don't have a lot of ideas when it comes to images the are not human centred but I do think that on this shoot was a good building block.
On improving my editing skills on photoshop, in this shoot I tried to tie the pieces together and into a similar colour palette. That I did well and I like the colours in these images however next time I think I need to try and avoid making the images so monotonous especially as it was a cloudy bay at the beach and my editing exaggerated that lighting.

www: I like the colours and variation in my photos additionally there are layers of interest in the photos. I like how I got to grips with the idea of landscapes and nature even though I and uncomfortable with that naturally. I like that the images are not to similar but also join in colour schemes and are similar enough to work as a set.
obi: My images could have used more of the formal elements, they are occasionally boring and I think I need to refine my use of photoshop to edit the images because I found it tricky to make the bits I wanted in contrast without ruining the rest of my image.
Formal Element: colours, layers and scale.

In this edit I used Photoshop to distort the images. I created a layer and then I edited it black and white and I also manipulated the contrast and lighting so that the images were contrasted and interesting, but also not overexposed. Then i edited it to that certain aspects were black and white but others were still vibrant colour.
WWW: I like the end result of these images, i think it draws out the colour without being too much saturation then the previous images.
EBI: I still don't love these images and the image of the right doesn't change much before and after the edit even though i tried to turn up the contrast of the black and white walkway and house.

Francoise Delfosse
Delfosse is a Berlin based architect and photographer who creates landscapes and surreal images from plastic bags. This series of work is called 'Antarctica in a Bag' In a interview he said 'I was inspired by "American Beauty", there is a scene in the film where a plastic bag is softly lifted and driven away by the wind. He created a landscape view out of what we throw away. This image manipulates the human mind into thinking something we value as very little is something we would spend hours drawing or admiring.
These images really show how much you can change the viewers perception of a photograph. I think he really uses lighting angles and the textures well to create some beautiful images of something almost no-one thinks of as attractive.

The focal point of the image is the pathway of 'snowy' peaks that draw the eye in, the textures of plastic bag and arctic scenery are complex and the cool colours of blue and white continue the fantasy. This image manipulates the eye.

The flow of this image mimics natural life and the roll of the lighted areas around the edge draws the eye into the focal point of the centre of the piece.

In this image Delfosse uses photography and tricks of the eye to create a mountainous 'snowy' scenery by using texture, colour and clever lighting. The bag seems to come to points at 'peaks' of the mountain and it reminds me of a valley.
|
In my image like the way the light aids the way I'm presenting the bag. I like that I got the idea of the shoot across. The texture of the bag is really interesting to photograph as it creates lots of points of contrast against the bright white.

Brendan Austin is a Photographer who travels the world taking stunning photographs. He was inspired by his family as he grew up moving fro place to pace, he lived in Thailand, Singapore and South Africa. He started taking photos in South Africa when he was 15 and now he has been shown in many galleries such as London, Stockholm and Keelrup. His photographs are supposed to create an emotional reaction in people and he takes photos mostly landscapes. However this section of his work is manufacturing landscapes from paper.
In this shoot I used a single piece of white paper and i experimented with different ways i could photograph it and make it interesting such as; cutting, tairing, crumpling and different uses of unnatural light to skew the image and change the way it looked to the camera.

Force of Architecture
Simon Phipps
Phipps uses photography to portray UK architecture and brutalist design, his view on the subject sheds a new, unique light on it. He mainly studies present post 1945 modernist British architect photographs. He prints his work, not on prints, but rather on aluminium substrate to create the ideas of the materials used to create the buildings. He follows the narrative of the project that it was to rebuild Britain after WW2, He recognizes the architectural merit of rebuilding a city with new ideas and a drastic take on how we as a city should live in the future, in concrete.

Shinischi Higashi
While it’s not immediately clear that Higashi has flipped a photo and then merged it, after a few seconds, you start to notice the small details, like the exact placement of the buildings or the rushing cars. In these photos there isn't much natural light as the photo is taken at night and most of this area is industrial so the light is coming from street lamps or from cars which can clearly be seen in this photo as that is the whole point in this photo, to show how light looks when it is taken with a slow shutter speed. The artificial lights form ribbons of colour that are magnificent to look at.
Artist and Me
In this photo Higashi uses colour and movement to create an image that looks magical. The focal points of the drawing are the ribbons of light circling the building. The shots are captured in the dark and the colours enhanced to emphasise the fluidity of the piece. The image has been flipped down the middle and shows a continuum through the photo.

Edward Muybridge
Eadward meybridge was a British photographer known for his groundbreaking work in the field of motion-picture projection. Using multiple cameras, Muybridge captured a horse, man and buffalo, then with a device of his own invention, the zoopraxiscope, projected a moving image. Born on April 9, 1830 in Kingston upon Thames, United Kingdom, he emigrated to the United States at the age of 20. He was one of the great photographic thinkers and technical pioneers of all time, whose mind reached beyond still photography and anticipated the rise of the moving picture.
The start of the wonder has a funny story, the famous trotting horse images was actually asked for by California Governor, Leland Stanford to help settle a bet! The bet was if all of the four hooves on a house leave the ground at any point whilst it is running. Maybridge believed that this was true and tried to prove it using his zoopraxiscope device.
His life was a crazy one not just due to his success in photography but also en-captured a murder trial, but by the end of his albeit crazy life meybridge published books with his photos and traveled Europe and North America.

Ignacio Torres
Torres is a Photographer from Texas who created this project from the idea humans are made of cosmic matter as a result of a star's death he created imagery that showcased this cosmic birth through the use of dust and reflective confetti to create galaxies.Torres' images are GIF files -- four regular still pictures shown in quick sequence in one frame. You are seeing the same person shot from four slightly different angles, which is why they appear to turn back and forth many of the images are shot in the West Texas scrub in twilight. The models are illuminated by a flash, synchronized with his cameras.

Amelia Fletcher has always been fascinated by a pictures and how they can make emotions come to light. She specialises in portraits and wedding photos. She is originally a beekeeper, storyteller and and traveller she first started photography when doing portraits of her friends on a disposable camera. Originally from the Blue Ridge mountains of North Carolina, having grown up on a farm, Fletcher tells us, “My roots are a major influence on who I am and what inspires me to create.”
I liked the force of the movement and the way the flour documents this power. I thought it would be a really interesting idea to expand on and I wanted to work with that movement and people.

In this image Fletcher draws the eye in on the womans face with the use of lighting and her medium of flour. the flour adds an element of fluidity to the image and draws in the movement used to create the image. The textures of the flour is interesting to look at and is beautiful as it falls on her skin.
In this image Torres uses colour, movement and texture to create a beautiful image of a person flying off into stardust. The image creates a magical feel and draws attention to the temporariness of man.

In my image I also used flour to show the fluidity and movement in my image, the flour tells a story of what happened before the image was taken and what will happen after. It shows that it is a snapshot of a bigger movement and action.

2nd strand- Force of Water
Alberto Seveso
Italian graphic designer and illustrator Alberto Seveso released a collection of ink photographs. The images were made by taking high-speed photographs of ink mixing with water. He is an Italian photographer and graphic designer born in Milan in 1976. In the early 2000's he moved from his little island home to Rome and started his self-taught career. He shows the idea of a new wave of art being digitally based and that art is not as much of a gated community as it appears. Seveso is self taught and successful at his ideas.
Sevesos force is powerful. The curves of the ink impacting the water almost mimics the dust from a bomb and the colours are definitely striking. The way Seveso uses photoshop exaggerates the colours and also allows him to bend them to the profile of a model.

3rd strand - Layered Images
Stephen Gill
In this photo the use of material layering brings life to the picture it creates a feeling of homeliness and serenity . Also it adds bright colour and textures to draw the eye. Im pretty sure Gill used film for this image and I think that was a smart choice as it makes the colours in the image seem deeper and richer. I like the way that the image does not include a face, It draws attention away from the person and to the textures and beauty of the image.
|
This is one of Gills images that has more layering, I find its really effective to transform the image. Additionally Gill used bleach to discolour the film, noticeably in the bottom right hand corner. I find this photo particularly interesting because I can't tell what parts are the original photo and i think this is hard to do but created a beautiful image for the mind to unwind.
|
I like this photo for many reasons, partly due to the colours of red and blue and how it ties in with the layer or seemingly random objects. Also i like this because of the huge difference of scale with the men in the boat and the layer which feels as if it could be something from under a microscope. The layers create a center of the image in the bottom right with the men and also incorporates texture in the mixed mediums.
|
Stephen Gill was born in the uk and his creative ability seemed from a young age. He and his dad regularly collected insects and pend life from the wild, which Gill would inspect under his microscope. This background is clearly shown in his work as it both mimics the intricacy and contrast of science and colourful inspiration from wild life. Gill was born in 1971 in Bristol, UK. In 1985 Gill started working at a local photography studio whilst sill at school. He took most of his inspiration from his urban English surrounding but later in life has moved to Sweden.
Gill is connected to the theme Force because of the juxtaposition between the different materials used in addition to the photos. The contrast of materials end up creating the image of a washed up debris or the inside of a vacuum cleaner.

1st Development
For this development first I went out and took landscape photos with the aim in mind to frame them so I could place objects over the images and also on colours that I could contrast or bring out with the objects layered. I really liked using reds in these images because it is a very strong primary colour and i thought they would be eye catching as I don't love landscapes and I did not want the images to be plain.
WWW: I think i successfully tied the two layers together, they both draw out the bright colours in the images and connect with them. And, although I strayed from the original photographers images I do like my interpretations.
EBI: I think some of the images are too high contrast and my lighting was off. I also think i could use more of the microscope imagery and work on the images as well as the second layer on top of the first photo.

Shoot 2
In this shoot I wanted to use a wider verity of objects in the layer of the image. I also wanted to reflect the human effect of the environments in the images. I wanted to use more texture and sometimes reflect the colours in the images.
WWW: I really like the textures in these images and I like the lighting more then in the previous images.
EBI: To improve I would focus a bit more of different areas to focus on.
