Levitation
Natsumi Hayashi
Natsumi Hayashi takes photos and posts the online on her blog as a diary rather than a series of photos. She is constantly taking new photos. Although she is infact jumping she does not call them photos of jumping but levitating. She takes her photos by herself but sets her camera, on a tripod, on a timer to capture a perfect photo that looks like she is levitating. I think she wants us to think about the idea of magic in the real world or perhaps the future of travel.
The photographer could be addressing the normality and drowsiness of every day life, choosing to create a playful interpretation of everyday tasks and thinking about lightening peoples day possible through photography. This could be shown by the wistful almost ideological method of bringing every child's dream of levitation to life (sort of). Although I don't think this is a political stance of hers through photography i do think its relevant today because especially now news and media choose to show the catastrophes of the world.

My Levitation Photos
In this task I was required to take a photo capturing a model jumping in the air, the aim of the task is to make it look like they were simply floating away (or levitating). This task links to the theme of movement because it is a way of showing movement whilst making it look effortless and magical. My intention was to respond to the task and create an image in a natural/ homely setting of everyday life where it is sort of imaginable that someone could almost float away.
In this photo I was trying to make it look like he was climbing stairs. It sort of didn't work because its a bit blurry but I think it's ok.
www: I used shutter speed very well to capture the model in the air with no other movement.
ebi: IF i could create a picture that looks like the model is flying not walking or jumping.

www: I think I got a good range of levitation photos in different angles. I also think i managed the exposure well creating colourful but not dark images.
ebi: I could have used different models and backgrounds and go to different locations with more adventurous ideas.

Zoom Blur - Dominic Harris
Dominic Harris uses a zoom blur technique to create a picture that is blurred inwards with a slightly focused center
1st Try
In this task I was required to create an image that was blurred by moving the focal lens to create an image that looks like a radial blur with a slightly stiller/clearer center to the photo. This task links to the theme movement because it shows movement through the camera whilst the object/model stays stationary. My intention was to create a photo that focused on a person or a body and look at faces and perspectives of people.
We captured these photos by setting a really low shutter speed and zooming in or out so create a blurred surroundings to a photo.
www: i got good movement in the photos by moving the lens.
ebi: i need to work on composition and using a centre of focus.
ebi: i need to work on composition and using a centre of focus.
2nd Try
On our second try we used the second technique we changed the ISO so that we could adapt the light sensitivity of the pixels and get a well lit photo, we also used the previous uses of zoom.
www: I prioritized my shutter speed to create a blurred effect and to capture the movement of the lens.
ebi: I created too much blur and it was not amazingly lit.
Next time I think i will consider more the composition of my photos and try and create an interesting or magical effect.

Zoom Blur Photoshop
In this task I was required to use Photoshop to edit the zoom blur effect onto my photos to create the desired effect.
The Process
1. First I uploaded my photo on to photoshop.
4. Then i set the radial blur amount to 100 and blur method to zoom.
|
2. Then create another layer and make it a smart object by clicking on my layer.
5. Look at your image and see where you want to have a clear image that is not distorted.
|
3. Then set it to radial blur by clicking on filter then blur and select radial blur.
6. Then use brush or rubber tool to rub out the radial blur to create a clear centre.

www: I think my photoshop is good and I understood it quickly.
ebi: I found it hard to get a good focus places without the camera.

Francesca Woodman
Francesca Woodman was best known for her surreal and slightly creepy images all in monochrome. She was a young American photographer who only photographed self portraits or other female models. All her photos are obscure in the best way and capture movement is a sort of raw form, the movement of human bodies through life.
Try 1
In this task I was asked to take some photos inspired by the works of Woodman using a still background but long shutter speed to capture a moving person. This task links to movement through its use of movement of the body and people through life. I wanted to explore the effect of using movement in photography on the emotions of the viewer, my aim was to confuse or slightly scare the viewer through the obscure images captured.
www: I think my photos are quite creepy to look at, sort of like she is not really there.
ebi: I could work on how I use focus in my images.

Edited
Then I was required to edit my pictures using Photoshop into Woodman's classic black and white.
Process
www: I think I got some pretty creepy photos and I found editing them easy.
ebi: To think of some different ideas using people and backgrounds to improve the quality of the pictures.

Portrait Disorder
Romain Laurent
My try
In this task I was required to take multiple photos of a model moving in some way and create a GIF from the photos using Photoshop. This task links to the theme of movement as it shows the movement of the model in a continuous form. My intentions were to capture the movement gradually of faces because that is where all emotion is held.
Moving Person
Next I was asked to capture the model moving forward gradually in a GIF. I did this both via steps and jumps to create the feeling of appearing and flying.
www: I like my use of aperture in these photos and I like the gif of her stepping forward
ebi: I don't like my GIF of her jumping because it doesn't look like she is flying it looks awkward.
ebi: I don't like my GIF of her jumping because it doesn't look like she is flying it looks awkward.
Final Giff
In this task I was required to create a GIF using multiple things; first i was required to take a GIF of a portrait of them moving, second i was asked to create a GIF of a person that wasmoving whilst capturing blur, last i was asked to capture a person moving forward then change model and move back.
www: I like the composition of my GIF
ebi: I should have used a tripod so my camera did not move.

Light Painting
Micheal Bossanko
MIcheal Bossanko is a photographer who uses long exposure to capture the movement of light with his camera and create images. He says he discovered light painting completely accidentally whilst taking a photograph of the moon. Whist taking the photo his camera moved causing a streak of light where the moons light had moved. He is based in Wales and started taking photos like this in 2004.
His images used shutter speeds ranging from 10 seconds to a whole hour whist Bossanko created these almost magical sculptures of light. He uses simple tools such as torches and glow sticks but the level of creativity and precision used by the artist captures the viewers attention and Transforms the setting that he is taking photos of.

1st Response
In this task I was required to take some photos using a torch or glow stick moving in the dark to create a painting in the image I captured. This task links to movement because it captured the movement of chosen light through your setting using long exposure of your camera to create magical glowing images.
www: I think i captured the images with good amounts of light captured, the images are clear and bright.
ebi: The images are a bit messy and next time I should experiment with turning the light on and off to achieve the desired drawing.
ebi: The images are a bit messy and next time I should experiment with turning the light on and off to achieve the desired drawing.
2nd Response
Again I was asked to take photos using light and a long shutter speed to capture light moving but this time we used a close space with a black backdrop.
www: I think my photos using the white/pink light are good and i like my GIF I made.
ebi: I think using glow sticks did not really work and the room in general was not very dark.
ebi: I think using glow sticks did not really work and the room in general was not very dark.
3rd Try
Again we were experimenting with light painting but this time I was trying to use more complex drawings with the lights and painting using multiple colours in one image.
www: I think my images and light paintings are much less messy
ebi: If i experiment with more interesting ideas.
ebi: If i experiment with more interesting ideas.
Editing Process
Edited Images
These are my previous images edited.
Response 4
This response I focused on a range of ideas. I used a strong torch and sheer coloured paper and fabric to change the colours of the torch.
www: I think I captured a range of bright images using a range of colours and shapes
ebi: If i manage to take some more photos with multiple colours and maybe a clearer idea of what I want to achieve would produce some more specified results.

Final Piece
The reason why I chose this photo is because i like the use of movement in conveying a creepy effect. The way her head is moving gives the impression that she is in pain or uncomfortable.
The reason why i chose this photo is because I like the colour of the light painting and the fact that there is no other light interfering. Also the fact that the movement is quite smooth and the colour is bright.
I chose this light painting because i liked the fact that it uses separate lines that aren't connected. I like the fact that it's a cactus and the amount of light thats not interfering.
|
The reason why I chose this gif is because of the colour scheme and composition.
I chose this photo because it was the first time i had done much to change a photo and it went quite well. It combines a levitation piece with a zoom blur effect to freak out the mind and make it look like the world around her is spinning.
I chose this photo because I like that its a bit weird and i like that it looks sort of abstract. Also I like that the colour is so bright.
